What getting matched means

The short answer

If you searched for a FERS retirement specialist near you, you are looking for someone who knows the federal system, not a general planner. A Federal Retirement Consultant is that: trained on FERS, CSRS, the TSP, FEGLI, FEHB and survivor rules, background-checked, and verifiable by name. Tell us your state and the decision you are weighing, and FFEBA matches you with one. The review is free, by phone, and nothing is filed.

Matching is by state, on purpose.

Many FRC holders also hold insurance or securities licenses, and those are issued state by state. Matching on your state keeps you with a consultant who is allowed to work with you where you live. The federal rules are the same everywhere; what changes from state to state is how your pension, TSP and Social Security are taxed, which is why every state page below spells that out.

How matching works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us where you are

Pick a time below and share your city, state and the decision you are weighing. Nothing is filed and you can stop at any step.

  2. Step 2

We match you with an FRC who serves your state

FFEBA, the organization behind the FRC designation, refers you to a Federal Retirement Consultant in its network who works with federal employees in your state. Look them up by name before the call.

  3. Step 3

    A free review, by phone

The consultant reads your situation against the federal rules and your goals, in plain terms. If your plan already fits, you will hear that.

Ready now? Pick a time and we match you with an FRC who serves your state.

What the review covers

Whatever state you are in, the consultant walks the same ground, in plain terms and against your own goals:

  • Your retirement date. Eligibility, the FERS Supplement, COLA timing, and how the date shapes your first years of income.
  • The survivor election. What it costs, what it protects, and how it affects FEHB for a spouse.
  • FEHB and Medicare. The five-year rule, and how your plan coordinates with Medicare later.
  • FEGLI. Which options you carry into retirement, and where coverage stops earning its cost.
  • The TSP. How it is invested today and how you will turn it into income once the paychecks stop.

Education, not advice. Nothing is filed at the review, and confirming figures with OPM or your agency before you act is always the right move. See what a review covers step by step.

Questions

Common questions about getting matched

01 Is a Federal Retirement Consultant the same as a FERS retirement specialist?
"FERS retirement specialist" is a description, not a credential, and anyone can use it. A Federal Retirement Consultant (FRC) is a designation: the holder completed training on federal benefits, agreed to a code of conduct, passed a background check, and is listed with FINRA's Professional Designations database. That is why you can confirm an FRC by name before you share a single number.
02 Does your state tax a FERS pension?
It depends on the state. Nine states have no income tax at all, several more exempt a FERS annuity entirely, and many others exclude part of it for retirees over a certain age. Pick your state above for the specifics. Confirm with the your state revenue department or a tax professional; this is education, not tax advice.
03 How do I know the consultant I am matched with is legitimate?
Before the call, look them up on our verification page. An active FRC shows as verified by name. If a name does not verify, do not proceed, and let us know.
04 What happens after the review?
Nothing, unless you want it to. The review is free and nothing is filed with us. If you later choose to move forward on a product through the consultant, that is how they are compensated, and it is always your call. How an FRC is paid is written out in full.
