Colorado taxes retirement income but excludes part of a FERS annuity for many retirees. Tell us the decision you are weighing and we match you with a Federal Retirement Consultant who serves Colorado, verifiable by name before the call.
If you are a federal employee in Colorado and you searched for a FERS retirement specialist, you are looking for someone who knows the federal system, not a general planner. A Federal Retirement Consultant is that: trained on FERS, CSRS, the TSP, FEGLI, FEHB and survivor rules, background-checked, and verifiable by name. Tell us the decision you are weighing and FFEBA matches you with an FRC who serves Colorado. Free, by phone, nothing filed.

That matters because the federal rules are identical in every state, but the take-home is not. A retirement date, a survivor election or a TSP withdrawal plan that is right in one state can land differently in another once state tax is counted. A consultant who serves Colorado reads your plan with that in view.
Colorado lets you subtract up to $20,000 of pension and annuity income if you are 55 to 64, and up to $24,000 if you are 65 or older, figured separately for each spouse on a joint return. A FERS basic annuity qualifies, and anything above the cap is taxed at the 4.4% flat rate. If you are under 55 you get no subtraction at all unless the income is a death benefit.
A traditional TSP withdrawal taken after age 59.5 qualifies for the same pension and annuity subtraction, but it draws on the same $20,000 or $24,000 cap as your FERS annuity and your Social Security subtraction. Most retirees use up the cap on the annuity alone and pay 4.4% on the TSP money.
Colorado taxpayers 65 or older subtract the entire federally taxable Social Security amount. From 2025 those 55 to 64 may too if adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less single or $95,000 or less joint, otherwise a $20,000 cap applies.
